What is the Medicine Wheel?

The Medicine Wheel teachings are among the oldest teachings of First Nation people. Its age is approximately 2500-3000 years old. It is a major symbol of peaceful interaction among all living things on Mother Earth and it represents harmony and connections. The word “medicine” as it is used in the term Medicine Wheel, refers to a healing, spiritual energy, a mirror within which everything is reflected back. The circle of the Wheel has no beginning or end, always moving, always continuing. It is believed that the circle represents a harmonious relationship with nature and with all living things that are our relatives and that all things are connected and equal. The first “Medicine Wheel” was discovered in Wyoming and is referred to as the big Horn Medicine Wheel. (Resource: The Reiki Times – Spring 2004 issue)

Native American mysticism taught that each thing within the Universal wheel, except man knows of its harmony with every other thing, only man is born with a fragmented view of the world. To achieve harmony he must seek to understand his own reflection in the Four Great Powers of the Medicine Wheel.

At birth each person is given at least one of the Four Great Powers: Wisdom, Illumination, Innocence, or Introspection. The purpose of man's existence is to obtain the remaining gifts and become a whole person. We are born into certain positions on the Medicine Wheel and as we get older we move to different positions on the wheel to gain various personal attributes and lessons on the way. If a person gets stuck on any part of the wheel, they are not a complete person for each must experience all the positions to be a fulfilled human being. This is why we travel the wheel four times during our lives. It is a mirror in which everything is reflected. The universe is a mirror of the people, and each person is a mirror to every person…
